If you’re traveling to Yogyakarta with children, finding a destination that is safe, educational, and entertaining is easy—Gembira Loka Zoo has it all. As the largest zoo in Yogyakarta, it offers visitors the chance to get close to hundreds of fascinating animals while enjoying a wide range of family-friendly attractions and activities.
But Gembira Loka Zoo is much more than just a zoo. It has a rich history dating back to the 1930s and has grown into one of Yogyakarta’s most popular recreational destinations.
The History of Gembira Loka Zoo
The idea of building a botanical garden and zoo was first proposed in 1933 by Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono VIII. His vision was to create a recreational park for the people of Yogyakarta called Kebun Rojo.
The project was later developed by Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono IX with the assistance of Dutch architect Ir. Karsten, who selected a site west of the Winongo River as the ideal location. Unfortunately, construction was interrupted by World War II and the Japanese occupation of Indonesia.
Following Indonesia’s independence, local leaders proposed creating a public recreational park as a commemorative gift to the people of Yogyakarta after the nation’s capital was moved back from Yogyakarta to Jakarta in 1949.
In 1953, the Gembira Loka Foundation was officially established under the leadership of KGPAA Paku Alam VIII, allowing construction to resume. Six years later, Tirtowinoto was appointed to oversee the development of the zoo. Thanks to his dedication, financial support, and passion for wildlife conservation, Gembira Loka Zoo expanded rapidly and became one of Indonesia’s leading zoological parks.
By 1978, its growing collection of animals and thoughtfully designed enclosures—created to resemble each species’ natural habitat—had made the zoo one of Yogyakarta’s most visited attractions.
More Than Just a Zoo
While observing animals is the main attraction, visitors can also enjoy many exciting activities throughout the park.
Camel Enclosure
Experience a Middle Eastern-themed area where eight camels live among pyramid-inspired architecture.
Petting Zoo
Children can safely interact with friendly domestic animals in a clean and well-maintained environment. Since the animals are not endangered and receive excellent veterinary care, this is one of the most popular attractions for young visitors.
Zoo Express
Hop aboard the miniature train that winds through the park, complete with curves, small hills, and tunnels. Designed with an American Old West theme, it’s a favorite ride for children.
Ninebot Track
Visitors can ride self-balancing electric scooters around a specially designed course featuring gentle slopes and winding paths. This attraction is recommended for visitors over seven years old.
Touch Pool
Get hands-on with various fish and aquatic animals in this interactive exhibit. Best of all, it’s free for all zoo visitors.
Animal Rides
For a unique experience, visitors can enjoy guided camel rides or elephant rides around designated areas within the zoo.
Fishing Pond
Designed especially for children aged 3–10, this shallow pond allows kids to catch small fish and even take them home. If they don’t catch any, the staff will happily provide a fish to ensure every child leaves smiling.
Fish Spa
Relax by dipping your feet into a pool filled with Garra Rufa fish, often called “doctor fish,” which gently remove dead skin while providing a soothing foot massage.

The zoo also features several lake attractions, including:
