[Stage 3] Exploring Semayang and Melintang Lakes in Mahakam

After lunch in Muara Muntai, we continued our journey to Tanjung Isuy, our final destination for the day. We would spend the night at a traditional Dayak Long House, offering a unique opportunity to experience the local culture.

As our motorboat cruised slowly along the Mahakam River, we admired the peaceful scenery while keeping our eyes on the water, hoping to spot the elusive Pesut Mahakam.

The Pesut Mahakam (Orcaella brevirostris), also known as the Mahakam freshwater dolphin, is one of Indonesia’s rarest animals. It inhabits the Mahakam River in East Kalimantan and is a critically endangered population of the Irrawaddy dolphin. Today, only around 80 individuals are believed to remain in the wild, making every sighting incredibly special.

Unfortunately, we weren’t lucky enough to see any dolphins during our trip. However, the journey was far from disappointing. Along the riverbanks, we spotted numerous bird species flying overhead and searching for food, while the untouched rainforest created a peaceful backdrop throughout the ride.

Lake Semayang and Lake Melintang

Lake Semayang and Lake Melintang are two of the largest freshwater lakes in East Kalimantan. Lake Semayang covers approximately 13,000 hectares, while Lake Melintang spans around 11,000 hectares. Together, they form part of the Mahakam River Basin and are surrounded by lush tropical rainforest.

These lakes play an important role in the region’s ecosystem, providing habitat for a rich variety of fish, birds, reptiles, and other wildlife. They also support the livelihoods of local communities, many of whom depend on fishing and traditional river transportation.

Travel Tips for Visiting Lake Semayang and Lake Melintang
