In 1931, the brewery was renamed Archipelago Brewery Company (Archipel Brouwerij Compagnie) and began producing Bir Bintang. The name Bir Bintang was chosen to reflect the brewery’s location in Indonesia, as “bintang” means “star” in Indonesian.
After Indonesia’s independence in 1949, the brewery was nationalized and renamed Heineken’s Indonesian Brewery Company. In 1957, the Indonesian government took over control of the brewery. Heineken regained control of the brewery in 1967 and renamed it Multi Bintang Indonesia.
Today, Bir Bintang is the best-selling beer in Indonesia, with a market share of over 60%. The beer is also exported to several countries in Southeast Asia.
