We start our adventure early to avoid the heat that quickly engulfs the Philippines after sunrise. By 7 am, we were already on our motorbikes, leaving Tagkawayan behind, setting our sights on Legazpi City.
Today, we decided to take it easy and not drive too far. The road from Tagkawayan was surprisingly pleasant, with minimal traffic and smooth, well-paved surfaces. The scenery was a mix of lush greenery and glimpses of local life, creating a peaceful backdrop for our journey. We passed through a quaint village near Bato Lake. The view was breathtaking, with the majestic Malinao Mountain towering in the background.
After that we took a break at a charming cafe called Embers Café & Restaurant. The café had a cozy atmosphere and good coffee of course.
It takes around 5 hours to reach Legazpi City, after that we checked-in into Maison de Gloria hotel. This hotel offers a stunning view of the Mayon Volcano (not direct from our room but we can see clearly from the Hotel’s parking area). The room is new and clean, but unfortunately, they use older split-type or window air conditioners that are quite noisy. These types of air conditioners are common in the Philippines and can be disruptive, affecting the overall comfort of an otherwise pleasant stay.
In the afternoon, we decided to explore the famous Cagsawa Ruins. This historical site is a testament to the powerful eruption of Mayon Volcano in 1814, which buried the Cagsawa Church and the surrounding town in lava. The ruins are a poignant reminder of nature’s might and resilience, drawing many visitors who come to witness this slice of history. The towering church belfry, which survived the eruption, stands as a symbol of endurance amidst the lush landscape.
Legazpi City offers a few activities for visitors. One of the most thrilling experiences is the ATV tour around the Mayon Volcano. This adventure takes you through rugged terrain, allowing you to get up close and personal with the iconic volcano. It’s an exhilarating ride that combines the thrill of off-road driving with the awe-inspiring views of Mayon.
For those interested in cultural experiences, visiting the Daraga Church is highly recommended. This baroque-style church, built in 1773, sits atop a hill, providing panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, including the Mayon Volcano. The church’s intricate facade and historical significance make it a worthwhile stop.
The next morning, we got a traditional Filipino breakfast, “Cold” Rice, Longaniza and sunny side up egg.
